BVRLA FAIR WEAR & TEAR GUIDE

BVRLA FAIR WEAR & TEAR GUIDE

Players Cars Leasing is a proud member of the British Vehicle Rental & Leasing Association (BVRLA) — the UK trade body for companies involved in vehicle rental, leasing, and fleet management.

As a BVRLA member, we are committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, transparency, and fairness — including full adherence to the standards set out in the BVRLA Fair Wear & Tear Guide.

WHAT IS THE BVRLA FAIR WEAR & TEAR GUIDE?

“Fair wear and tear” refers to the natural deterioration that occurs through normal day-to-day use of a vehicle. It does not include damage caused by impact, neglect, or misuse — for example, collision damage, harsh driving, or poor maintenance.

The BVRLA Fair Wear & Tear Guide provides an industry-standard benchmark for the condition in which a vehicle should be returned at the end of its lease. It helps ensure that all vehicles are assessed consistently and fairly, protecting both customers and leasing companies from unreasonable charges.

The guide covers all aspects of the vehicle’s condition — including exterior, interior, tyres, wheels, glass, and mechanical components — with clear expectations for what is considered acceptable wear versus chargeable damage.

HOW TO AVOID END-OF-LEASE CHARGES

We recommend that customers regularly inspect and maintain their vehicle throughout the duration of their lease.

A few months before the end of your agreement, set aside time to review your vehicle against the BVRLA Fair Wear & Tear standards. For the most accurate inspection, ensure the vehicle is clean, dry, and well-lit.

Below is a simple checklist to help you prepare:

FAIR WEAR & TEAR CHECKLIST

  • Ensure all servicing is up to date — check your service logbook and records
  • Check tyre tread depths meet or exceed the legal minimum of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters
  • Confirm that all electrical features and controls are working correctly
  • Make sure you have all keys, manuals, and documentation (e.g. handbook, MOT certificate, service records)
  • Inspect the interior for cleanliness, ensuring no rips, burns, or stains on seats or carpets
  • Inspect the exterior for scratches, dents, or scuffs that go beyond normal usage
  • Remove all personal data from the vehicle (e.g. sat-nav addresses, Bluetooth pairings, stored contacts)

WHAT COUNTS AS DAMAGE (NOT FAIR WEAR & TEAR)?

When the vehicle is returned, it will be inspected against the BVRLA Fair Wear & Tear criteria.

Any condition outside of those standards may result in a charge.

The most common chargeable issues include:

  • Deep scratches or chips on paintwork

  • Dents or panel damage

  • Rips, burns, or stains on upholstery or carpets

  • Cracked or damaged alloy wheels

  • Missing keys, documents, or service records

To avoid unexpected costs, we advise arranging any repairs or maintenance before your vehicle is collected.

If you’re unsure whether any specific issue will be considered damage, our team can provide guidance in line with the BVRLA Fair Wear & Tear Guide.
